How to Clean Your Mattress

May is designated as National Better Sleep Month, a holiday dedicated to raising awareness of the benefits of better sleep. Many factors play into the role of a good night’s rest, including the comfort and cleanliness of your pillows, bedding, mattress firmness, and more.

While you probably wash your sheets and pillowcases often, how frequently are you washing the one item that you can’t just throw in the washing machine – your mattress!

Though it’s not as easy as throwing it in with a load of laundry, cleaning your mattress is easier than you think. Follow these steps below to properly clean your mattress of dirt, sweat, stains, odors, and more!

  1. First, strip your bed and wash the bedding, pillowcases, and mattress covers based on the manufacturer’s instruction labels.

  2. Gently vacuum your mattress with a hand vacuum or upholstery attachment for dead skin, hair, dust mites, or any other lingering unwanted materials.

  3. Next, spot clean any stains; If you have any stains on your mattress, combine dish soap, baking soda, and hydrogen peroxide into a bottle and spray. Blot or rub the mixture into the stain, place a towel over the stain, and let it sit for approximately 1-2 hours.

  4. After spot cleaning, deodorize your mattress by sprinkling baking soda over the entire mattress and let it sit for a few hours. If the weather is nice, open your windows and let it air dry while the baking soda seeps in. Once complete, vacuum again to ensure all remaining debris is gone.

  5. Once you are finished, flip the mattress to the other side. You should flip your mattress every 3-6 months to ensure each side is getting equal wear and tear.
    • Note: Not all mattresses are double-sided! Double-check your manufacturer tags to confirm yours is not one-sided.

  6. Once you are complete, place your clean bedding back on your bed, and enjoy a nap or night of restful sleep!
